This book argues for increased acknowledgment of pregnancy, birthing and childrearing as social activities requiring concurrently physical, intellectual, emotional and moral work from those who undertake them. Amy Mullin thinks about both parenting and paid childcare, and analyzes the effect of impairment on this work. The first chapters contest mistaken beliefs about pregnancy and birth such as the concept that pregnancy is just valued for its outcome, and not for the process. Subsequent chapters concentrate on child care provided in different circumstances and on the needs of both suppliers and receivers of care.
