There’s a lot of different opinions out there in the internet world about stretch marks, you can prevent them, you can’t prevent them, you can get rid of them, you can’t get rid of them and on and on it goes. But hey, if only ONE person out there swears by prevention and/or removal, then it’s worth a try right? Actually, there’s thousands of woman out there who rid themselves of their stretch marks or significantly minimize the appearance of them, so that’s all the convincing I need.
Let’s start with the basics, diet and exercise. Obviously exercise is “preggy” safe exercises (if you’re still pregnant), but these two things alone go along way in helping prevent or minimize stretch marks. Eating a healthy diet that includes Vitamin A, C and E are crucial in optimizing the health of your skin. It gives your skin the best chance at dealing with the stretching and changes occurring in your skin during pregnancy.
Exercise also plays a big part, it helps you keep off excess weight which means your skin doesn’t have to stretch as much. It also helps keep your skin healthy and toned, again, to give your skin a fighting chance in dealing with the stretching of your skin. After all, during pregnancy the main cause of stretch marks is due to the skin not coping with the rapid weight gain. The under layer of your skin tears and forms scars which appear as “stretch marks” on the outer layer of your skin. Not a pretty sight right?
Let’s talk about the skin for a minute, our skin has a natural ability to stretch then return to normal after weight gain then loss, but you have to make sure you’re feeding it with the right nutrients and looking after it so it can work at it’s optimal capacity. Diet, exercise and plenty of water is extremely beneficial in looking after your skin. Many people believe you should increase your water intake to 10-12 glasses a day to keep your skin hydrated and healthy during pregnancy.
Massaging and moisturizing is also helpful. Massaging increases blood circulation and moisturizing keeps the skin soft and supple, both help your skin cope with the changes during pregnancy. There’s many over-the-counter creams and lotions out there you can use and a lot of them are specifically designed to prevent pregnancy stretch marks. You can also make your own creams, common ingredients are cocoa butter, aloe vera, olive oil and scrubs.
If you already have the unsightly marks don’t fear, there’s also a lot of creams and lotions on the market to get rid of them. Remembering that what works for some may not work for other’s, your best bet is to try different ones until you find the one that works for you. Make sure you give it a decent try though, don’t give up after 2 or 3 days, it takes time to see results so hang in there…. you can be stretch mark free!
For those of you who have a spare hundred or thousand dollars in your pocket then there’s good news for you. There’s been break through’s in laser treatments over the past couple of years and the results have been remarkable. Treatments are non-invasive, painless and you’re treated as an outpatient.
So there you go, stretch marks don’t have to be a permanent condition and there’s many things you can do to prevent and treat them. Many of the solutions are simple, free and as a bonus, will benefit your overall wellbeing. At the very least you can minimize the appearance of stretch marks so go ahead, go shopping for your two piece bathing suit!
