Though only around 25% of women take childbirth education classes during their pregnancy, their worth is immeasurable. Childbirth classes teach parents what to expect, as well as how to cope with the trials and tribulations of pregnancy, labor, and birth. These classes are excellent for quelling fears and helping parents to gather opinions regarding the type of birth experience they wish to have.
Just as it is important to find the right care provider during pregnancy, it is also important to find a childbirth education class that fits one’s personal point of view regarding birth.
Hospital Classes
Hospital classes are often taught by childbirth educators who are certified by Lamaze, Bradley, or Birthing From Within. However, certification is by no means a requirement and some hospitals opt instead to hire a labor and delivery nurse who may or may not have specific training in natural childbirth. These classes are inexpensive and brief, and are far better than not taking anything. However, some couples walk away feeling that these classes do not properly prepare them for the big day.
Lamaze
Lamaze classes are the most widely known type of childbirth class. Lamaze focuses on calming, relaxing, and purposeful breathing. It was the inspiration for many of the newer childbirth education courses available to parents.
Bradley
Bradley classes were designed by obstetrician William Bradley. They heavily emphasize the use of one’s romantic partner as birth coach. They also focus on nutrition and natural, un-medicated vaginal birth. These classes are traditionally taught by a husband and wife team, both of whom have become certified before teaching the classes. Partners are also encouraged to read Dr. Bradley’s book “Husband Coached Childbirth.”
Hypnobirthing
Hypnobirthing teaches women self-hypnosis techniques for enduring the pain and discomfort of labor and delivery. Hypnobirthing classes, as well as certified hypnobirthing doulas, are growing in popularity. Hypnobirthing is best suited for women who are seeking a quiet, meditative, and drug-free delivery.
Birthing From Within
Birthing From Within was designed by Pam England, who underwent a homebirth turned cesarean, followed by a successful homebirth. The classes take a holistic approach to pregnancy and birth. Skills taught are valuable for pregnancy through postpartum and are extremely thorough.
Birthing From Within classes take a far more spiritual, transcendent approach than some of the other options. These classes are ideal for women who want a natural hospital birth or a homebirth. They are also highly valuable to women who are planning to have a VBAC, as they help women to overcome trauma and tap into their personal strength.
