If you have just found out that you are pregnant congratulations. You are about to embark on one of the greatest journeys in your life, the next 9 months are going to be full of ups and downs and it all starts with the first trimester.
During the first trimester your body will undergo a series of major changes, if this is your first time being pregnant then knowing what to expect can be extremely beneficial. Nausea is usually one of the first things that will occur during the first trimester of your pregnancy; this is a result of the increasing amount of hormonal changes taking place in your body as it prepares for the pregnancy.
What You Can Expect
Morning sickness, as the nausea is called during pregnancy may only last for a short while during the first trimester or you could be unlucky and experience it throughout the entire duration of your pregnancy. As well as nausea you could also start to experience bouts of heartburn or indigestion, eating smaller amounts at meal times can help to ease this.
You may also notice that your breasts start to swell as well as becoming tender; this is due to your breasts starting to fill with breast milk in preparation for your baby. Wearing a comfortable bra with plenty of support can help to ease the discomfort associated with swollen breasts. Many women during pregnancy will notice they begin to get spots or greasy skin; again this all due to the change in hormone levels during pregnancy and it is perfectly normal.
The first trimester can often be a worrying time for a pregnant woman, fear of miscarriage is one of the biggest worries during this time. Many women decide against letting friends or family know they are pregnant until the end of the first trimester because of this fear. It’s important to note that miscarriage is not as a common as you may think; it just gets a lot of coverage in magazines and newspapers.
Taking Prenatal Vitamins
Increased levels of the progesterone hormone during the first trimester can leave you feeling tired or fatigued. Pregnancy puts a strain on the body as a whole so when you find yourself feeling exhausted it should come as no surprise.
Taking a good prenatal vitamin can help alleviate the fatigue since they contain iron, one possible downside to taking prenatal vitamins is the fact that the iron can also help to trigger your sickness. If this happens then you should try changing the brand of prenatal vitamin that you use, many pregnant women have found that taking the vitamin at varying times of the day can also help eliminate the sickness.
A lot of pregnant women also worry that if they don’t put on a certain amount of weight during the first trimester then it means that there must be something wrong with the baby. This simply isn’t the case some people put on a lot of weight while others only gain a few pounds. If you have any concerns about your weight during your pregnancy you should consult your doctor or a nutritionist who will be able to put your mind at ease.
Whilst you are pregnant you should try to eat as healthily as you can, avoiding high fat foods like fast food and other takeaways. Your doctor will be able to provide you with a list of foods that you should avoid during your pregnancy.
