Immediately you discover your pregnancy, your first thoughts are about what your baby’s gender would be. Your husband and all who hear about your pregnancy will also think and wish it to be either a boy or girl child. Take old wives’ tales about your child’s gender with a pinch of salt, this article will dispel all the imaginative tales and point you to how to know your baby’s gender without hassle.

The reasons you may want to know whether you are going to have a girl or boy are numerous. The following will suffice:

1. It could be based on your local tradition, as in the case of India where high dowries are demand from would be brides, is why Indian parents prefer boys to girls. Or because of the tradition of family names being carried forward by boys whiles girls are married out to other families.

2. You might just want to prepare your babies dresses before its arrival.

3. You have had your desired number of a particular sex and would want to have the opposite sex.

4. You may decide to find out the sex of your unborn child in order to abort the undesired sex.

Are There Unscientific Methods of Determining whether your pregnancy is of a boy or girl child?

The straight answer is no, but old wives’ tales abound on how you can find out whether you are carrying a girl or a boy child.

Old Wives’ Tales:

If your conception resulted from an intercourse you had while lying on your right side, it is a boy.

Whenever you conceive while lying on your left side, it is girl.

It is a girl if your pregnancy makes you look uglier than you were before conception.

Girl babies cause severe morning sickness.

Boy babies induce a gluttonous appetite for food.

Girl babies make more veins varicose

The scientific method

There is no scientific backing for the above claims. The medically accepted procedure for determining the sex of your fetus is the ultra sound. Obstetric sonography or ultra sound is used to visualize fetuses between weeks 18 – 22 of pregnancy to ensure easy identification of baby’s gender. If an ultra sound is done earlier, your child would not have grown enough to display its sexual organ, and if the ultra sound is done later, your uterus would have been crowed, making it difficult to identify your baby’s gender.
