Infertility refers to a problem with the reproductive system that makes it impossible for one to conceive a child. It may also refer to the inability of a woman to carry a pregnancy full term or a man being unable to make a woman pregnant. Fertile women undergo a natural period of fertility before and during ovulation time.
Infertility problems affect approximately six million people in the USA. About 30 percent of the cases are due to problems with the female while 30 percent are due to problems with the male and the other percentage is due to unexplainable factors in both the male and the female.
The condition is usually diagnosed in couples who have been trying to conceive for over a year without success. It is recommended to see doctors if you have been trying for over a year as most of these cases are treatable.
Common Cause of Infertility Problems in Women
Endometriosis- This condition occurs when the tissue found in the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. The condition has no symptoms in some women while others may experience painful menstrual periods, painful intercourse or even pelvic pain. A possible solution to this condition is taking prescribed fertility drugs with artificial insemination, having surgery to remove the abnormal tissue or unblock the blocked tissues or adoption.
Poor egg quality- If your eggs have been damaged or have chromosome problems, then it is hard for them to sustain a pregnancy full term. The quality of the eggs tends to decrease with age. The condition has no symptoms but there are solutions which may include: in vitro fertilization using donated eggs or adoption.
Ovulation problems- This prevents the release of a matured egg from the ovaries. There are no symptoms but possible solutions may include fertility drugs and IVF.
Common Causes of Infertility in Men
Sperm abnormalities- Sperm abnormalities may be caused by a number of factors ranging from birth defects, exposure to harmful chemicals and the kind of lifestyle one is living.
Retrograde Ejaculation- this occurs when the muscles of the bladder fail to function as required during orgasm and the sperms are forced back into the bladder as an alternative of out of the urethra. This condition can occur due to diseases such as diabetes, spinal cord injury and aging.
Hormonal deficiencies- the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) is the key hormone that triggers the release of testosterone and other reproductive hormones. A deficiency in this hormone is known as hypogonadism and may result in defective sperm production.
