Maturing on the poorer side of town, 18-year old Michelle Winston (Keri Russell, “The Americans”) not just appreciated the chance to make some cash babysitting for the rich, upwardly mobile Bertrands, but gets a kick out of being surrounded by all the material trappings of their house. Costs (Stephen Collins, “7th Heaven”) and Sallie Bertrand were a young, successful couple who seemed to live a delighted, typical existence. That storybook tale comes to a terrible end when Sallie is discovered dead in her home, the victim of an apparent suicide. Feeling a responsibility to-and compassion for-Bill and the two children, Michelle becomes a growing number of a component in the Bertrand home. As she begins to invest virtually all of her free time there, and is seen driving Sallie’s brand-new automobile and wearing her old fashion jewelry, she rapidly alienates her mom and all her school pals with her new-found obligations. This abrupt improvement is also looked upon suspiciously by the police. When the scenarios surrounding Sallie’s death are re-examined, Michelle quickly discovers herself the prime suspect in her death. Michelle’s pals, jealous of her all-consuming relationship with the Bertrands, presume there’s something undesirable happening between her and the allegedly mourning widower. Their suspicions prove to be fairly accurate as Costs does make advances towards the impressionable schoolgirl. His objectives are not based on love, however to set up his attractive baby-sitter for the murder of his better half.
