Is Pregnancy Bleeding After Sex Harmful?

featured image

Most pregnant women and their partners are often deeply concerned whether pregnancy bleeding after intercourse is normal or whether sex during pregnancy is safe at all. Well, it is true that sexual intercourse may result in pregnancy bleeding, but in normal circumstances, it is not a sign of danger. For a pregnant woman, bleeding after intercourse is usually normal and there is nothing much to worry about. But, there are certain warning signs you must look out for.

Why Does It Happen?

A lot of changes take place in the body of a pregnant woman, which include increased blood supply to the vaginal walls and cervix. The bleeding occurs when these blood vessels break because of the pressure caused during sexual intercourse. Though these blood vessels exist in all women, the blood supply is low in women who are not pregnant. That is the reason bleeding during sex is more likely to occur in pregnant women. Some spotty, occasional pregnancy bleeding after sex is very common, especially during the second and third trimesters. However, if the bleeding is accompanied with cramping and heavy flow of blood, it may be a matter of concern, and in that case, you must consult your doctor immediately. If you have suspicion or if you are not sure about the condition, you are strongly recommended to talk to your gynecologist. It is also important to note that sometimes the spotting may not appear shortly after sex; it may take up to twenty-four hours to show.

How To Prevent It?

Many expecting moms stop having sex at all in order to prevent pregnancy bleeding. Abstinence can obviously be the best solution, but it is a tough decision. There are other effective preventive strategies also that you can try. For example, you can try sexual positions that do not put pressure on those blood vessels. Spooning positions and rear entry are the best. Alternatively, you can try abstinence and focus on other forms of intimacy, such as cuddling, showers, and massages. Do not hesitate to talk with your partner about these changes.

Warning Signs

Pregnancy bleeding after intercourse is usually scant bleeding or spotting. If it is heavier than scant spotting and/or accompanied with cramping, you must consult your doctor immediately. If intercourse stimulates some kind of contractions and if the contractions continue even after you are through, it may also be a warning sign.

Always remember, pregnancy bleeding may indicate different things. So, if you are not sure and have doubts, it is always wise to talk to your gynecologist about it.
