IVF also known as in vitro fertilization is a process where egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside the body. It is used for those who are having trouble getting pregnant. It is only used when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed. The process involves controlling the ovary process hormonally by removing the eggs from the woman’s ovaries and letting sperm fertilize them in some fluid. The zygote is then moved to the woman’s uterus with the intent to get the woman pregnant. The first successful one that was done was in 1978.
IVF in vitro fertilization can be used to help with female infertility in women that have problems in their fallopian tube. It can also help male infertility where there is something wrong with the quality of the sperm and in which case an ICSI may be used. This is used when sperm have a hard time penetrating the egg. For an IVF to be successful it usually requires a health ova, sperm that can fertilize, and a uterus that can keep a pregnancy. It is usually only attempted after less expensive options have failed. IVF can be used with egg donation or surrogacy where the woman who is giving the egg isn’t the same who is carrying the pregnancy to full term.
Success rates for pregnancy using IVF are a lot better today than they were just a few years ago. For those who are under thirty five years old you have about forty one to forty seven percent chance of getting pregnant. For those thirty five to thirty seven years old you have about thirty one to thirty eight percent chance of getting pregnant. After that the numbers are lower but you still have about twenty to thirty percent chance of getting pregnant.
The main factors that influence pregnancy rates have been suggested to be maternal age, duration of infertility, bFSH and number of oocytes, all reflecting ovarian function. The optimal age for a woman is twenty three to thirty nine years at time of treatment. Other determinates that may help you are having low alcohol and caffeine intake, success with a previous pregnancy, and the number of embryos transferred in the treatment cycle.
So if you are interested in getting the IVF procedure as you have tried everything else out there to get pregnant talk to your doctor to see if you are a good candidate.
