When you think ‘fertility goddess’, what comes up for you?

Is it, perhaps, a pregnant female surrounded by little ones and looking somewhat overwhelmed or is it a woman, full in her power receiving all the support she needs as she births something new into the world.

Our more recent versions of the fertility goddess focus primarily on the reproductive piece like pregnancy and lots of children, which for some is not so appealing because that seems to come hand in hand with responsibility, pressure and the losing of the self.

Fertility and Patriarchy

This image of the fertility goddess which focuses mainly on reproduction (or production) is a symptom of patriarchy.

One dimensional and preoccupied with outcome, it was born from a perception of a woman and fertility that is not aware of the creative process nor has any understanding really of the role of dreaming, connecting, holding sacred space, sensing, nurturing and listening when it comes to manifesting something new.

So what is happening is that many women really want to express their fertile goddess but that image is so enmeshed with a sense of stress, losing self and being defined only as a mother that often there are mixed feelings within a woman around allowing motherhood to enter the picture.

In short, many women want to have babies but not according to the patriarchal view of what a woman or fertility goddess is or should be.

This was true for me and is something that comes up time and time again with the women I work with, the desire for children coupled with the need for freedom, time out, independence, adventure etc.

A New Fertility Paradigm

It is time for us to change that image of motherhood, the one that sets many of us up for failure even before we begin, and connect into what the creative process is really about.

You are a creator. That is your essence and in order for you to enjoy pregnancy and motherhood in the way that your soul (and baby) is yearning for, then you are being invited to get in touch with that part of you and your powerful feminine gifts.

This was something lacking on my own fertility journey, during which I would have loved support that really understood the feminine and could help me understand how my feminine wisdom was guiding me into motherhood. In a world that has been shaped by patriarchy and male values and understanding of how life works, we have forgotten about feminine wisdom and her essential role in success.
