Giving birth is such an emotional moment so it is natural for the future mother to focus her thoughts and feelings on her child and herself. However, it is equally important that you are well prepared for the experience and well organized. There are some items that you must pack in your hospital bag, which has to be prepared a couple of weeks before your due date. Take a look at the essentials which must be present in the hospital bag for labor.

The full set of ID, insurance and other relevant documents – You have to have all paperwork with you to ensure that the administrative aspects of giving birth in a hospital or birth center are taken care of. The documents should be well organized to avoid unnecessary headaches on this truly special occasion. Your birth plan is not an official document but you must not forget to take it with you, as it will help both you and your partner feel more confident and at ease.

Underwear, sleepwear and shoes – Bring five to eight pair of comfy cotton bikini just in case you will not be comfortable in the netted ones provided by the hospital. You should also get a nursing bra which provides considerable comfort and support plus easy breastfeeding. Pack two roomy and comfy nightgowns in your hospital bag for labor as well. PJ pants may not be as convenient. Get a nightgown which is comfortable and which you can meet visitors in. You will also need slippers for going around the room. Take flip flops as well if you do not step barefoot in the shower facility.

Toiletries – Hospitals typically provide soap and shampoo, but you may want to bring your own in your hospital bag for labor. Get a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, a hair brush and lip balm. A face cleanser, hydrating cream and makeup are useful to have with you, even though they are generally not considered essentials. Do not miss to pack a nipple cream for relieving sore nipples due to breastfeeding.

Items that will make you feel comfy and relaxed – You would want to feel at ease before and during labor so it is essential to bring items which can take the stress away. Some of the most popular options among moms include a cell phone to talk to loved ones who are not around, a favorite pillow, MP3 player or iPod with songs that you love and something to read such as a magazine.

Now you can prepare your hospital bag for labor with ease and ensure that nothing is missing.
