Abortion is generally known as termination of pregnancy at an advisable stage during the 9 month maternal period. The abortion clinics follow different procedures in order to deal with the unwanted pregnancy and late-term abortion is one of them. It can be generally referred to as termination of unwanted pregnancy during or after 24th week of the gestation period. Apart from the mother’s strong will of not giving birth to the child, this type of abortion can be performed due to a good number of reasons. Usually, late-term abortion is done due to genetic defects in the fetus or because of some serious life threatening complications for the mother during the pregnancy period.
In order to make late-term abortion successful, abortion clinics follow three common methods. The choice of method mainly depends on the condition of the mother and the physician’s intellect.
1. Induced Labor
This is one of the most common methods of late-term abortion. First of all, the patient is sedated in order to relieve from any kind of painful feeling during the procedure. In order to make sure that no live birth takes place, various methods for stopping fatal heart beat are used. Laminaria, sterile seaweed, is normally inserted in the cervix of the mother, thereby allowing the opening to happen overnight. The labor is successfully initiated the next morning with the help of proper medications. These medications are given to the patient in order to relieve from the discomfort caused by the medical procedure.
2. Dilatation and Extraction
In this method, the fetal heart beat is essentially stopped by following the above described method. Laminaria is placed inside the cervix for allowing a gradual opening and the next morning, the patient is treated with the needy medication that leads to the dilation and softening of women cervix. Successive dilatation can be used as per the will of the physician to perform a surgical procedure. After a particular level of dilation is reached, the procedure is completed by gently extracting the fetus from the womb by using special kind of forceps. This medical procedure may last from 30 minutes to over couple of hours. Prior to the procedure, the patient is provided with intravenous anesthesia in order to avoid any kind of further discomfort.
3. Hysterotomy
In many ways, the hysterotomy procedure of late-term abortion is similar to the cesarean procedure. First of all, the mother is treated with anesthesia prior to which, an incision is made in order to reach the uterus. The gestational tissue and the fetus are then removed, and the incision, skin and abdomen are closed again. This procedure involves a stay of about 2-3 days in the hospital. In comparison to the above discussed methods, this method is associated with highest rate of maternal prenatal mortality and morbidity.
So, these are some of the most commonly adopted methods of late-term abortion by most of the abortion clinics. Have a careful look at the above discussed methods in order to gather more knowledge on the commonly followed medical procedures of late pregnancy termination.
