Trying for a Baby

One in seven couples in the UK will suffer from infertility problems. With the current economic climate and cut backs in the NHS it is getting harder and harder for couples to find affordable safe easily available treatments.

There are many causes of infertility in both men and women. Some of the most common causes in women are;

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – this affects egg production in the ovary.
  • Thyroid problems – Both an over active and under active thyroid gland can prevent ovulation.
  • Premature ovarian failure – this is when a woman ovaries stop working before she is 40 years old.
  • There are many other factors that can affect a women’s fertility including over exercise, obesity and drinking too much alcohol.

If damage occurs to the fallopian tunes (the tubes that carry the egg from the ovary to the womb) then this can make it much harder for a woman to conceive naturally. Damage to the fallopian tubes can be caused by;

  • Scarring caused by surgery – surgery in the pelvic region can cause damage to the fallopian tubes and womb.
  • Defective cervical mucus – during ovulation the mucus in the womb should thin to allow sperm to reach the egg, if this doesn’t happen then this can affect fertility.
  • Submucosal fibroids – these benign tumours can grow beneath the muscle lining the womb wall and then grow into the middle of the womb.
  • Endometriosis – this when tiny pieces of the womb lining start growing in other places, like the ovaries.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease – is often the result of as sexually transmitted disease and is an infection of the upper female genital tract.

There also many factors which can affect a man’s fertility. The common issues are usually as a result of a problem or problems with the man’s semen. Abnormal semen can make it very difficult to conceive. Abnormal semen can can have several causes including;

  • Low sperm count or no sperm at all.
  • Decreased sperm mobility.
  • Sperm abnormalities including abnormal shape.

Damage to the testicles can also cause fertility problems. Damage to the testicles can occur in any number of ways but the most some of the most common causes are;

  • Infection of the testicles
  • Injury to the testicles.
  • Testicular cancer.
  • Undescended testicles.
  • Problems caused by congenital defect of the testicles (something you were born with).
  • Azoospermia (no sperm present in the semen) is a common cause of infertility in men and can be caused by infection or surgery.

There are of course many main steam medical treatments to help in the treatment of infertility but many couples who have tried the traditional medical approach are disappointed by the results and are put off by the invasive nature of the treatment or side affects of drugs.

The are alternative treatments for infertility that involve no invasive procedures and no drugs and are easily affordable. Quite often a holistic approach combining life style changes with change of diet and natural diet supplements can greatly help.
