What Is It?
Endometriosis is a condition that causes abnormal growth of endometrial cells. This is very similar to the cells that are located inside the uterus. During menstruation, many of the endometrial cells will actually shed off at times.
Endometrial cells that are attached to the tissues in the uterus are also called endometrial implantations. They are often found in the area around the ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines and the uterus. They can even be found outside of the vaginal cavity.
Causes and Risk Factors
There are several causes for endometriosis. Some of the biggest causes include irregular periods, hereditary factors, and side effects of certain medications. The major risk factors include uterine abnormalities, conditions which prevent the normal flow of blood out of the uterus and family history of this medical condition. Uterine infections increase the risk as well.
It is worth pointing out that the risk is also higher for women who have never given birth. This means that the condition is more likely to occur in young women. It has been found that it affects mostly women between the ages of 25 and 35.
Symptoms
The main symptoms of endometriosis include painful menstrual period with the pain often being the strongest during the last few days, pain during intercourse, urination and bowel movements and excessive bleeding during periods. It is important to see a doctor if you have any of these symptoms.
Treatment
When endometriosis is diagnosed, it is treated early before more damage is done. Treatment options include various types of hormone therapy. There are certain birth control pills that can be taken to help treat endometriosis. A few of the most common drugs include Diazole, Gestrione, and Progesterone. A doctor will determine the therapy needed based on the condition of the patient. The chances of a full recovery will depend a lot on the progression of the disease, and how long the treatment has been administered for.
Surgery is required when a woman who has the condition wants to conceive. Generally, women with endometriosis may require assisted reproduction treatment in order to conceive. In severe cases of the condition, a hysterectomy may be required.
