Implantation Symptoms: 5 Signs of Implantation

When a woman conceives, the sperm fertilizes the egg inside of the fallopian tube. After that, the fertilized egg travels down the fallopian tube and into the uterus where the egg burrows into the lining of the uterus and implants. This is known as implantation. It usually takes about 7 to 10 days from the time a woman ovulates for the egg to travel through the fallopian tube, into the uterus and implant. Once this occurs a woman may notice some symptoms. These symptoms could be a good indicator that she is pregnant.

Here are a few things that can happen when the egg implants:

Bleeding or spotting

Some women notice slight bleeding or spotting a few days before their period would ordinarily start. This spotting sometimes is mistaken as the start of her menstrual period, but spotting that happens around 10-12 days after ovulation is likely from the embryo implanting. When the embryo attaches to the wall of the uterus and burrows in, it can cause bleeding to occur.

A woman might see bright red or pink bleeding. This just means the blood is still fresh. Or, she might see brownish bleeding, which indicates older blood. Typically, this type of bleeding is not heavy like a period. It’s generally light and scanty. It may only be noticed when wiping. Heavier bleeding is more likely to be an early start to menstruation.

Cramping

Cramping can occur as the uterus stretches and prepares for pregnancy. The embryo digs into the uterine lining and burrows into place. As it gets firmly attached to the uterus, this can cause mild cramping similar to menstrual cramps. Because of the timing of implantation is so close to when a woman might experience PMS, it may be difficult to tell if the cramping is caused by pregnancy or if it is just a pre-menstrual symptom.

Bloating

Bloating happens at several points in a woman’s cycle. Around ovulation a woman may experience some bloating and then again right before her period starts. Bloating can also happen during implantation. The lining of the uterus thickens in preparation for pregnancy and this can cause bloating.

Backache

A woman may experience a mild backache in early pregnancy. As the baby attaches to the uterus it can cause cramping, discomfort, and sometimes a backache. If a woman has a backache along with other pregnancy symptoms, it could be a good sign that she is pregnant.

Triphasic Chart

If you keep a fertility chart, you can tell a lot about what is going on with your body. On a non-pregnancy chart, a woman should see what is known as a biphasic chart, meaning it has two phases. Before you ovulate, your temperature will be low. Then after you ovulate your temperature will go up and stay up until your next period starts. However, if you are pregnant, you may see a second spike in your temperature sometime after implantation. This is called a triphasic chart and is a good sign that you could be pregnant.
