Managing PCOS Is Important in Getting Pregnant

PCOS is a condition affecting 5-10% women in their reproductive age. PCOS simply means Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. PCOS is related to lifestyle diseases and obesity. Mostly in 50% of the cases, obese women are the ones affected. It is a kind of infertility. It is a condition in which the hormonal balance is affected of a woman.

Mostly in majority of the cases, women suffering from PCOS will have higher levels of certain hormones especially some male hormones like androgens. It’s not necessary that all women suffering from PCOS should have polycystic ovaries, but in most cases it is, hence the name polycystic ovarian syndrome.

The symptoms vary from person to person, but some of the symptoms are as follows:
1. Irregular or infrequent periods – Women suffering from PCOS may have irregular or infrequent periods. This is a sign that the woman may be suffering from PCOS.

2. Difficulty is getting pregnant – If you are facing difficulties in getting pregnant, you should check for PCOS, as this may be the cause for it.

3. Acne – Acne maybe due to various reasons, but PCOS also can be a cause. So checking for PCOS in case of non-conception is a good idea.

4. Excess hair (hirsutism) – Women having excess hair on the upper lip, lower abdomen, chin, around the nipples etc. is bound to have PCOS. If you have excess hair in any of these areas and are finding it difficult to get pregnant, you may be suffering from PCOS.

5. Hair-loss – Women having hair-loss in a male pattern on top of the head or on the temple are also symptoms of PCOS. Hence such women should also check for PCOS in case of non-conception.

6. Weight-gain or obesity – If you are obese or if you have been gaining weight lately and having problems conceiving, then there are chances that you might be suffering from PCOS.

7. Darkened skin around the nape of the neck, skin folds, elbows etc. – Darkened skin on these areas maybe a sign of insulin resistance and there are possibilities that these women also suffer from PCOS. This is, in case these women have failed to conceive in a year’s time.

In short PCOS is a sub-fertility problem and can be rectified very easily with weight control and some minor lifestyle changes. Hence there is nothing to be panicky in these circumstances and do the needful. Have faith in yourself and your medical practitioner too and see the magic that unfolds.
