1. All that you eat should benefit your child – Pay attention to your diet and nutrition. According to Dr. Tom Brewer getting 80-100 grams of protein daily not affects your child’s development but can also prevent pregnancy complications and help you achieve a healthier and safer birth. Every developing cell is formed from protein.

2. Do good to baby while doing good yourself! Give your baby a “Brain Boost”! – Exercising daily in pregnancy stimulates your baby’s brain and makes for smarter babies! Canadian researchers found babies whose moms exercised during their pregnancy gave birth to babies with enhanced brain activity as newborns.

3. Seek a shorter, less painful labor – Practice yoga! It has been proven to shorten labor and lessen perception of labor pain, while making bigger and healthier babies and moms with less pregnancy complications. This from a study done at Vivekananda Yoga Research Foundation in India.

4. Blessed are they who use B.R.A.I.N. – Ask questions any time a test or procedure is recommended during pregnancy or birth. Always ask why you need it, how it will help you, how it might expose you and your baby to possible danger. Then use your intuition and the information you learn to proceed with the procedure or wait and do nothing.

5. Beware of NOT taking a childbirth class! You and your birth partner will need to know the process of labor and birth, relaxation techniques, and all about medical procedures.

6. Blessed is she who helps “mother the mother”. A doula who is trained in the normal process of labor can help you work together with your birth partner to give you both confidence, to help you find comfortable positions, relax, and not arrive at your birth place too soon.

7. Blessed is she who stays home as long as she can. When contractions are 3 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute long for an hour, it’s time to start getting ready to go unless your caregiver specified otherwise for your situation.

8. Love yourself in labor – Do these 5 things – Eat, drink, sleep or nap, walk, and get in the bath or shower.

9. “O’ ye who believe” have faith in the process of normal birth -when you want to give up and want drugs, it means you’re almost done and ready to push out your baby. Hang in there!

10. Believe in yourself and let your belief become your reality. Write your intention to create the best birth for you and your baby.
