There’s a misconception out there that woman only donate eggs to complete strangers out of desperation and a way to earn some extra money. This isn’t the case. There are a lot of reasons why a woman might donate her eggs. Here’s a look at some of them.
It’s true that there are women who are motivated by financial reasons, but the majority of egg donors are driven by driven for less selfish reasons. They simply want to donate their eggs to help someone who is having a difficult time conceiving have the chance of a family. Some women don’t simply donate to strangers, but donate their eggs to help a friend or family who can’t conceive naturally or the likelihood of conceiving naturally is very slim.
The American Society for Reproductive Health (ARSM) has completed research into all aspects of reproductive health including the reason for egg donation. In a survey of 100 egg donors, the majority (at 68 percent) said the reason why they donated their eggs was to help someone. This was their most important reason for doing what they did. Financial compensation was also a reason where 29 percent said that the dollar amount was their primary motivation. The remaining three percent donated to help someone specific, like a family member or a friend. According to the ARSM survey, every one of the woman who donated their eggs said they would donate again. Half said they would do so without compensation.
Not simply anyone can donate eggs. There are some specific criteria that need to be met in order for a woman to qualify for egg donation. There is an age limit. Donors younger than 21 years old are not accepted, and women generally need to be no older than their early 30s. This is because biologically, by the age of 35 the quality eggs is diminished and continues to diminish with each passing year.
Egg donors also need to undergo psychological testing. All the criteria required from donors varies slightly from clinic to clinic, but there are a few generalities that all clinics screen for. The goal is to make sure the donors are as healthy as possible so that the eggs they donate are the best ones possible to increase the chance of successful fertilization and implantation into the recipient.
Women who donate their eggs need to be the following:
• Normal body mass index. Women who are considered overweight do not qualify for egg donation.
• Non-smokers and non substance abuser
• A general good family history without a history of significant physical or mental health problems
• Advanced level of education is preferred since it implies that the women are intelligent. This is not to say women without advanced education are unintelligent, but most clinics use level of education completed as an easy indicator of intelligence level.
• Ability to meet the significant time requirements for egg collection and retrieval.
• Donors generally must be close to a fertility clinic or center because the process of egg donation is time-consuming and the process can be less complicated if the donor is close to the retrieving clinic.
