Should I Sleep On My Right Or Left Side If I'm Trying To Choose My Baby's Gender?

I often hear from people who have heard old wives tales or superstitions about things that they should do if they are trying to conceive a certain gender. An example of one of these is that the woman should lie on a certain side while having sex or while sleeping in order to get the desired gender.

I heard from someone who said: “one of my friends said that she has heard that if you want a boy baby, then you should lie on your left side when you fall asleep at night. Is this true? And if so, what is the thinking behind this?” I will try to address all of these questions in the following article.

In the ancient times (and by ancient I mean as early as the fifteenth century,) it was said that if a woman had sex on or fell asleep on her right side during her conception window then she would have a boy baby. The idea behind this has to do with the belief that the heat of the sperm affected baby gender. And the belief was that the right side of the woman’s uterus was hotter than the left. And that the warmer sperm were more likely to produce a boy baby. During this time period, people also believed the right testicle produced warmer sperm than the left, which was more likely to produce a boy. So, women would lie on their right side and some couples would actually bind the man’s left testicle when they wanted to get a boy.

Thinking about this can bring about a chuckle, since most men would scoff at this outdated practice. It is my belief that there is most definitely a better and more scientific way to go about this. In fact, heat is known to damage sperm and make you less likely to become pregnant. So while I don’t think the heat from a warmer uterus or the right testicle could affect sperm in any way, the whole idea of trying to heat sperm is contrary to the knowledge that heat can damage it.

Here is what is believed to influence your baby’s gender according to more recent thinking in the current century: timing; PH; and the way in which the sperm are deposited. Timing matters because the boy sperm are shorter lived so conceiving early in your cycle favors girls. PH is important because an acidic PH discourages and weakens boy producing sperm. And deeper penetration gives you a little bit of an advantage when you want a boy baby, while shallow penetration can be beneficial if you want a girl.

Notice that none of these things are influenced by lying on any particular side. If you really think that this advice could be useful, then there is certainly no harm in lying on your right side for a boy and your left side for a girl. Lying in a certain orientation shouldn’t hurt anything, unless it makes you have more shallow or deeper penetration. I don’t see any scientific basis for lying on one side or the other, but if you want to try it anyway, than I don’t see that it could do any harm.
